Artists Bio: Mary Ann Duffy Godin, a Vermont native who grew up on a Milton, Vermont dairy farm, enjoys a creative spirit that has followed her throughout her life. She started her journey into watercolor not knowing where it would lead. After forty years as a business/technology classroom teacher at Milton High School and her five children grown and gone, Mary Ann transitioned into becoming a Vermont Watercolor artist. I was 62 years old and ready to take on something entirely different than what I had dedicated my life to for so long! In all due respect, however, I do believe that the skills I had already cultivated for success in the professional world such as setting goals, meeting deadlines, and being organized coupled with the business and technology skills I acquired are important as well as essential to the art world and in that regard placed me ahead of the curve.
That being said, I learned early on that skillfully bringing the brushstrokes, paint, and water together on the paper was the challenge of a lifetime! With the help of a couple of very talented artists, I persisted and will always be grateful for their knowledge and for the kindnesses they extended to me when I first cast a blind eye toward watercolor. In addition, I was fortunate to study under Jean Cannon, a mentor and a friend, who served me up with good instruction and excellent feedback.
I successfully achieved Signature Membership from the Vermont Watercolor Society in 2017. I am a member of the Milton Artists’ Guild and a past member of the Vermont Handcrafters, Inc. My work has been accepted in juried shows both at the VWS and at the Bryan Memorial Gallery as well as the Vermont Handcrafters. I am committed to improving my art based on feedback from sharing my art with others whether it be a state-wide juried art show or a conversation with another artist or simply a person viewing my art. I deeply believe that the gifts we are given we are given to share so I am very pleased to be part of this vision for the Vermont Watercolor Society.
My work can be seen at the Milton Artists’ Guild and Gallery or on its website at www.miltonartistsguild.org.
